Chapter IV of Ace Guitar Lessons is all about playing the blues! First we look at blues rhythm guitar playing and shuffle patterns, and after we get into some blues lead guitar lines.

Bluesy Bass Walks

In this lesson you're about to learn a 12 bar blues guitar pattern using a simple but great sounding blues walk. This is also known as a Bass Walk because of the use of low single notes that are often used in blues bass patterns - the foundation of blues rhythm. This lesson's in the key of E.

 

Bars 1-4 of a 12-Bar Blues:

Bars 1 - 4 of a 12 bar blues in E

The first 4 bars of a 12 bar blues are in the key of the I chord (E in this case).

 

Bars 5-8 of a 12-Bar Blues:

Bars 5 - 8 of a 12 barre blues in E

Bars 5 and 6 are the IV chord (A in this case). Bars 7 and 8 are the I chord again (E).

 

Bars 9-12 of a 12-Bar Blues (Turnaround):

Bars 9 - 12 of a 12-bar blues (turnaround)

The last 4 bars of a 12-bar blues are known as the Turnaround.
Bar 9 is the V chord (B), bar 10 is the IV chord (A), bar 11 is the I chord (E), bar 12 is the V chord (B).
